Apple cards resemble Google Play cards in principle and differ in details that cost a store owner money if they do not know them. These are the details.
iTunes or Apple? The name changed and the product widened
The card used to be called iTunes and was spent on music and apps. Today it is the Apple Gift Card and covers almost everything: the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, in-app purchases, and even hardware in some markets. Your customers still call it "iTunes", so treat both names as one thing and do not correct them — understand what they want instead.
The region matters here too
The balance is tied to the Apple ID's country. A US card on a UAE account is rejected, and the message shown does not explain why. Ask before selling: what country is your Apple account set to? Checking is easy: Settings → name → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region.
And here is an important difference from Google: Apple allows a country change more freely, but the current balance must be zero and every active subscription is cancelled. So if the customer subscribes to iCloud or Apple Music, changing country is a heavy decision rather than casual advice.
Subscription requests: the biggest opportunity and the most confused one
Many of your customers do not want "a card" — they want to renew something: a full iCloud, Apple Music, an app subscription. An Apple card solves that for anyone without an international bank card, and it is a recurring monthly need rather than a one-off purchase.
- Ask what it is for: "subscription or purchase?" The answer picks the right denomination and stops you selling more than they need.
- Remind them at renewal: a message before the month ends brings the customer back at no marketing cost.
- Small denominations usually cover subscriptions, and they are the fastest-moving part of your stock.
The fraud warning specific to this card
Apple cards are the scammer's tool of choice worldwide: a fraudster calls a victim posing as an official body and tells them to buy Apple cards and send the numbers. If an unfamiliar customer urgently wants large denominations, seems anxious, or says someone is on the phone with them right now — stop and ask. You will lose far less by pausing a sale than by protecting a person, and you keep your store out of a police report.
Selling rules
- Confirm the account country before handing over the code, and record the answer.
- Ask what it is for (subscription or purchase) so you sell the right denomination.
- Watch urgent large-denomination requests from a new customer.
- Buy wholesale from a trusted source only — stolen cards are disabled within days and the loss falls on you.
